Holding down an InControl key will also let you choose to control Live’s device, pan, Send A, and Send B settings as another layer of control. That’s a welcome feature for extending the reach of the Launchkey’s hardware while giving the user extra flexibility. Three InControl buttons toggle the fader, knob, and pad sections from the custom Live control to standard MIDI controls, so you can use Live’s MIDI Map mode to set them to whichever controls you want. That’s where the new velocity-sensitive pads come in very handy. When you select instruments, effects, or instrument and effect Rack devices, the knobs will map to the eight Macro controls of a Rack or to certain parameters of instruments and effects, while the pads may play notes from a Drum Rack, for example. Buttons navigate the track selected and the row of clips selected. In the Session view, the 16 pads provide a top row for launching clips and a bottom row for stopping them. Once the controller is set up for Live, the board’s faders, knobs, and pads adapt to the active section of the software. What’s more, three InControl toggle buttons let you switch sections of the Launchkey from their InControl settings to standard MIDI controls that you can map to whatever you want. It has built-in InControl technology for adapting its controls to all major music software, with custom scripts for Propellerhead Reason and Image-Line FL Studio, and HUI control for other software. The Launchkey 49 MK2 doesn’t stop at Live control, however. The pads are also velocity-sensitive for better expression when using them to trigger drums and other MIDI notes.

The big upgrade here is that the 16 launch pads are now colourfully lit so that they’ll correspond exactly with the colour of the clips in Live’s Session view (rather than having just red, yellow, and green lights as in the last version).

Keys 1 is where I send leads and pianos, and Keys 2 contains mostly pads and synth chords. But those are just pad controllers: For those who want a low-priced Ableton Live controller with a keyboard, Novation offers a newly updated Launchkey 49 MK2 (also referred to in some places as Launchkey 49 RGB), as well as 25- and 61- key versions. Sometimes it’s nice to depart from my pre-programmed patches in the computer and just tweak on a sound live in the moment.Īltogether, I send 5 channels to FOH: Keys 1 (stereo), Keys 2 (stereo), and the Moog (mono). A Juno through a Strymon Big Sky is a magical combination, and the Moog is an unbeatable bass synth. In addition to software, I use a Moog or Juno as additional flavor. I’ve found it very valuable in some high stakes moments. I highly recommend having a similar backup patched in for those moments. That way if the computer does crash, I can keep playing.

With that pedal I can switch from the computer’s sounds to the keyboard’s internal sounds with one button. So, I use a DMB Stereo A/B Switch to always keep the sounds from S90 close by. Even though Mainstage is very stable, it can still crash. In the midst of a fast transition, laptop keys are just too small to hit accurately. The rig is set up so that I should never have to touch the computer. To access the laptop during the set I use faders, knobs, and pads on the Launchkey to control filters, trigger effects, fade volumes, switch from one patch/song to the next, and so on. In those situations pre-programming becomes too confining. Particularly on dynamic songs it’s nice to be able to slow or add momentum by changing voicings and rhythms. Basically I’m eliminating mistakes before I even get on stage! Now, I don’t always like to be so pre-programmed on every song. Sometimes I even like to disable some unused notes to help leads stay super clean. On faster songs I like to use chord triggers, arps, and lots of layering to make sure the sounds are punchy and powerful. Mainstage provides great features that set me up for an excellent and (hopefully) flawless performance. Nearly every sound and effect that I send to FOH is from the laptop. Mainstage 3 is the brain of everything in my rig.
